The Vector/Cutco company is it recommendable to work for them OR are they a scam?

Well I got this job (that I desperately need) from Vector/Cutco company. It seems pretty chill and easy. I mean making money and demonstrating a product that I think is pretty neat... and I think I'm doing ok.. out of 5 demos I made 4 sales... Not bad I would think... For my first weekend...But up until now... thanks to my friend... I keep hearing all this talk about how it's a scam and this other stuff.... About the whole you have to pay for the kit they give you for demos... and you do... but that money is just in case you damage or loose some of the "sample products" and the kit it's self is worth like 500... so I think its reasonable... it's like Collateral... and when you don't want to work for Cutler anymore you can keep your kit... for your self.... or you can sell it... or you may return it... SO I am confused! WHY DO PEOPLE SAY IT IS A SCAM?
