How do i get my d16z6 hooked up to vtec?

hi, i got a 94 civic LX, i thought it was a 1.5L non-vtec but yesterday i was changing my air filter and the guy at auto zone said that it was 1.6L. so i checked the # on the engine and it says its d16z6. i was pretty shocked b/c one of the problems i was having with my car was that it was kinda weak, so it was really hard to believe it was a VTec. how do i make the engine go fast?! there are two plug lookin things on the top left corner that are not plugged to anything, i think its called the vtec solenoid, one is green and the other is grey i think. thank you
